ozma914: cover of our new humor book (Hoosier Hysterical)

This photo is actually from a few years ago when Emily was still in school, but Indiana University-Purdue University has been in the news lately (not necessarily in a good way). The time of year is about right! This is the Liberal Arts Building, if my rusty memory serves.

I really loved being down at IPFW, which is easy for me to say because it was Emily who had to actually pass the classes. I'd find a nice spot and write, and there were lots of nice spots. I wrote several columns and the majority of two books—maybe three—while she was in school. For a writer, there's something to be said for leaving behind the distractions and errands of home.

Plus, the library was awesome.

SLIGHTLY OFF THE MARK

My wife has a lot of good qualities. Of  course, if she had bad qualities I wouldn’t write about them here, would I? That’s called “preserving the evidence”. I didn’t read all those mysteries for nothin’, bub.

I, on the other hand … well, my qualities are only so-so.

Which leaves me here, in the doghouse, which I guarantee the dog doesn’t appreciate at all. You see, in May Emily became a college graduate, one of the first ever in either of our families, and I didn’t throw her a party.

Oh, I meant to. But I also meant to write a bestseller and have a beach house in Maui, and that hasn’t happened so far, either.

What threw me is that, after a great deal of thought, she elected not to go to the actual graduation ceremony. When I was younger I thought that kind of thing was a requirement, but turns out they’ll still give you your diploma even if you don’t slap on the cap and gown. That being the case, I assume my sneaking into Purdue’s graduation with a stolen cap and gown thirty years ago would have gotten me nowhere.

I returned the gown, by the way. Kept the cap.

For some reason I’ve never been certain of, you’re graded in college on a 0-4 scale. You’d think colleges would be able to come up with something that had more numbers! For instance, my solid C average in high school would have translated to a solid … I don’t know … 2.5? Math was never my thing, which explains the solid C. )

It's been a bit of a long weekend here at the old' homestead (and looking to be a long week).  Emily, who's been down with an ear and sinus infection, had a bad reaction to her antibiotic, and has been very sick; thus our being mostly absent from the internet.  The doc put her on a different bug drug, and once the old one wore off most of the side effects went away -- at least she can hold down solid food -- but she ran a fever most of the weekend.  She's feeling better now and is on the road to recovery, but I haven't checked her temperature yet this morning. I'm a little worried that this up will be followed by another down.  Still, not to worry: Now that she's keeping down the antibiotics we'll have her fixed up in no time.  (Okay, I'm still worried, but that's my job.)

I've been having mild cold/sinus symptoms that I suspect are just allergies -- from what I'm hearing allergy problems are unusually common this winter, and I don't usually take my meds this time of year. It's probably just that we've been cooped up for the last several days, except for occasional runs to the store. After all, sinus infections aren't contagious.

They aren't, are they?

They're predicting 4-8 inches of snow and high winds here before the main part of the oncoming storm hits on Wednesday. People around the country have had it lots worse -- there's a blizzard watch just to the west of here -- and we're stocked up on medicine and food.  However, I'm told Emily's college has closed because of weather only twice in the last 37 years, so I'm understandably concerned about getting her down there.  Don't bother saying she shouldn't go because of her illness -- higher education waits for no one and no thing! But even if we do make it down for her quiz on Tuesday, I'm fairly well convinced the roads will be too bad to attempt it Wednesday. We'll see ... I'd think a college would take conditions into consideration and maybe, at least, allow students to turn in work over the internet, but they seem to assume everyone lives across the street in student housing.

What else? Oh, the website reached 500 hits sometime yesterday.  Sorry we haven't updated in a little while, but my webmaster hasn't been up to it. How goes it with everyone else?

I've finished the final polishing of "Red is For Ick", which for those who missed it is a 62,000 word young adult mystery. It's ready to be sent out to potential agents, which I'll probably start right after Halloween.  It's got a kind of Veronica Mars meets Gilmore Girls vibe to it ... I think it's pretty good, but that's up to future agents/editors to decide.

We didn't blow away, although I was out on storm watch for awhile Tuesday.  There were 10 confirmed tornado touchdowns in this general part of Indiana: Two counties that adjoin ours suffered damage, but although we were placed under a warning there were no confirmed touchdowns here in Noble County.

Insurance is getting the accident all sorted out, and it looks like I'll get a rental while my car is repaired.  Since we're taking a trip to Missouri in November, it'll be nice to know we won't have to hear the vibration of the crumpled panel or worry about the damaged tire giving way.

Aaaaannnnddd, the moment you've all been waiting for:  Cute grandkids in costume, photo taken by their proud momma!
