I'm back! The Storm Chaser galleys were successfully gone through in a marathon all-nighter session, by both me and Emily, and sent on back to the publisher. Unless I hear otherwise, the e-book version should be out either June 1 or June 15, with the print version a few weeks after that -- I'll have more details when I get them myself.

SLIGHTLY OFF THE MARK

I have little to add to the death of everybody’s favorite terrorist, Osama bin Laden, beyond the obvious: YAY.

Should we celebrate the death of another human being? Well, I’m throwing a great big ol’ toga party for, as a friend put it, Osama was Laden, and I’ll tell you why in a minute.

First off, yes, bin Laden is dead. Why would the Obama administration fake his death now, instead of closer to the next election? Similarly, if Obama made the announcement to draw attention from releasing his birth certificate, why? If the certificate’s a fake, his people had two whole years to make it perfect. If it isn’t a fake, who cares? My theory was that it had something embarrassing on it, like a different father’s name or a notation from the doctor that he had big ears. )

If you happen to be a registered voter in Albion -- vote for me on May 3!  If you're not ... well, just don't get caught with that false ID.

SLIGHTLY OFF THE MARK

Once upon a time, a serious fire broke out in a downtown business.

As soon as the Department of Defense got the first 911 call, they dispatched a full alarm assignment of fire trucks from the Department of Homeland Security. EPA firefighters attacked the blaze, while an ambulance from the Centers for Disease Control stood by in case of injuries.

The streets around the building quickly became impassible due to fire trucks and hose, so several police officers from the FBI were needed to provide traffic and crowd control. They were assisted by employees of the U.S. Department of Transportation, who set up barricades around the area. )

BIG Storm Chaser related announcement coming up soon ...

This week's column, "At Least Government Waste Keeps Taxpayers Entertained", is up on the Churubusco News website here:

"Two weeks ago I gave you the first ten of what one blogger called 20 of the craziest things that the US Government is spending money on. In tribute to the way the feds operate, I used the blog’s numbering system, in which 1-10 were the bottom of the list, and 11-20 are the top of the list, with 20 being 1. Doesn’t that sound like a government operation?"

SLIGHTLY OFF THE MARK

I know you were waiting with bated breath for part two of my top 20 ways the government wastes money, but every once in awhile I latch onto something as it’s going down, and have to comment. We’ll continue counting down next time; I suspect there’ll still be federal overspending in a week or two.

              .

One day, while at my full time job, I took a 911 call from someone who wanted us to check on a dog running loose. However, I don’t believe the police should waste their time on dog complaints, so I put the caller on hold and then drove into Whitley County, because that’s out of our jurisdiction in a place where I can’t be reached by my employers. )
I haven't taken sides in the Wisconsin debate -- I figure this is an issue for state legislatures to decide, followed by the voters deciding on their decision, and I don't live in that state. Still, I found this article interesting, and presenting an underreported point of view.

My heart goes out to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, all those killed and wounded in the senseless shooting in Tucson, and to their friends and families. It appears now to be the act of a single, insane individual, and yet even after that came out this tragedy is being used as political ammunition in yet another divisive, insulting argument.

This horrible act will generate plenty enough rancor and politicizing later; for now, please have some respect and give everyone time to mourn and heal.

Although greatly simplified, this is a bit more accurate and even-handed, for better for or worse, than some of the vitriol that's been going around:

On a totally unrelated note, I don't get a chance to write this headling often:

Werewolf Sighting May Have Been Coyotes

The full Moon last week was on Tuesday, so a report of a werewolf near Kendallville early Sunday was most likely false.

In fairness, the witness calling in a strange animal told police it might be a coyote -- or a werewolf. The caller reported at 2:43 a.m. that an animal was running loose near dog kennels on Fred's Court, near the west edge of the city, and added that it might be one of the two.

Kendallville police checked the area and saw what they believed were coyotes, which took off running when they arrived. Just in case, the next full Moon is on September 23.
