I mentioned to someone earlier that it seems like, no matter how bad the weather might seem in northeast Indiana, someone else is getting it worse. That was certainly the case this weekend, when we had a little six inch snowfall while just about everyone east of us was getting clobbered by a full out blizzard, complete with nearly two feet of snow. It just wasn't all that bad here (not that I liked it much). In fact, most of the problems here in Noble County wouldn't have happened if people would just slow down and remember what it's like to drive on the white stuff. Just the same, I've got copy to write, so:

Two people were hurt in a crash near Wawaka Saturday morning, one of about thirty weather related incidents reported to the Noble County Sheriff's Department as the first major snowfall of the season moved through northeast Indiana.

Keith L. Miller, 22, of Milford, and Joshuah L. Logan, 29, of Kendallville, were hurt when the vehicles they were driving collided on US 6, near CR 200W, according to the Noble County Sheriff's Department. Police say Miller was driving east at about 7:31 a.m. when he lost control of his 2003 Chevy pickup in a construction zone.

Miller's truck spun around 90 degrees and slid into the westbound lane, where it was hit by a 2000 Jeep driven by Logan. The vehicles were damaged badly enough that they had to be taken away on flatbed wreckers.

Both men were taken to Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville: Miller for treatment of a hip injury, and Logan for head and facial injuries. Units responded to the scene from the Sheriff's Department, Albion and Orange Township Fire Departments, and Noble County EMS.

Numerous weather related crashes and injuries resulted from about six inches of snow that fell over Noble County over the weekend, but Indiana was impacted by only the edge of a storm that's being called the Blizzard of 2009: large areas of the East coast were shut down by the storm, which dumped close to two feet of snow and stranded or delaying travelers in several states. The most high profile was President Obama, who was forced by the weather to take a motorcade from the airport to the White House, instead of a helicopter. Obama, perhaps ironically, was returning from a climate change conference.

In Noble County, several of the storm related accidents were on the unusual side, including a snow plow that wrecked east of Albion. Philip M. Weeks, 51, wasn't hurt when the Noble County Highway truck he was driving overturned near SR 8 and CR 225E at about 10:43 a.m. A heavy wrecker had to be called in to upturn the 2002 truck.

Another vehicle rolled over onto its side on US 6, near 400 E, at about 3:29 a.m., again without injury.

Other less than usual incidents included a farm tractor equipped with a snow blade involved in an accident in Rome City; an all terrain vehicle that hit a pickup truck on 350E, near Baseline Road; and a discovery of marijuana in a pickup truck involved in a hit and run accident at Miller's SuperValu in Rome City. In the latter case the driver, Gregory D. Unternaurer of Shipshewana, faces charges of possession of the drug and leaving the scene of an
accident.

A driver was charged with drunk driving after sliding into a home near Kendallville. The crash happened on Allen Chapel Road when a 1996 Olds veered off the pavement and slid into a front porch at about 4:38 a.m. Sarah Marie Smith, 26, of Hudson, wasn't hurt, but was jailed on an OWI charge after her blood alcohol content was allegedly measured at .09%.

Another driver ended up in legal trouble when two vehicles collided in Merriam at 6:28 a.m. Ebelsain Villegas, 33, was cited for not having an operator's license when required after his car hit another driven by Keith C. Wile, 47, of Ohio.

Overall, through the day Saturday, Sheriff's Department dispatchers received reports of 18 vehicle accidents, 8 vehicles that slid off the roadway without being damaged, and at least one weather related medical call. One location -- the intersection of Long Lake Road and CR 200N -- had the distinction of being the location of two different accidents over the weekend. Both cases involved pickup trucks: One crashed into a tree and ditch, and the second into a utility pole.

State and local snow plow crews were out for much of the weekend, and by Saturday night the number of accidents reported dropped considerably. Other than the Wawaka area accidents, no serious injuries were reported in Noble County.
