Only a few days remain before the 25th anniversary American Cancer Society Relay for Life, which goes from May 30 - 31 at the West Noble High School, south of Ligonier. The event begins with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, and goes on until a closing ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Cancer survivors are encouraged to come to the event, even if they haven’t received a formal invitation. After all, remembering both survivors and those who have passed are what it’s all about; a survivor ceremony will take place at 5 p.m., and at sign-up a survivor and one caretaker will be given meal tickets for the Survivor’s Dinner.
Team setup will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, and organizers remind team members to bring their own water bottles. During the Relay, everyone is asked to bring all the quarters they can for “Quarters for a Cure”, a plan to line the track with quarters as part of the Relay’s fund raising – a ¼ mile track, lined along with inner edge with quarters, amounts to around $4,000! The quarters will be picked up and placed in a bucket during the Luminary Ceremony.
Volunteers are needed to help with the concession stand; anyone interested should contact Tina Anderson at (260) 636-7124.
Also needed are more items for a Silent Auction, which will close at around 6 p.m. Saturday.
As another incentive to raise funds for the battle against cancer, three people have agreed to have their heads shaved at the Relay if teams raise at least $100,000: NCRL Chairman Ed Anderson, American Cancer Society Community Representative Mark O’Maley, and Albion Town Councilman Mark Hunter, who is also a writer for the Albion New Era and NCRL Public Relations Representative.
