National Telecommunicators Week

I'm too full of rage to talk about the Boston Marathon tragedy right now. Instead, as this was already National Telecommunicators Week, I'd ask that you take a moment to send thoughts and prayers to the 911 operators/dispatchers of the Boston area. These men and women, already stressed by a major event in their city, are among the unsung heroes who have to hold it together when everything is falling apart.

I will never forget having to attend depositions in a natural (urban/forest interface) disaster case of a 911 dispatcher who's employer was getting sued because flames got to here before the help he thought was on the way did. Unbelievable. Not bad enough to know you couldn't help someone; no, the dead person's family has to drag you into court because they can't accept the fact that bad things happen.

That's an all too familiar problem in the emergency services; especially in rural areas, where people have a bad habit of assuming there's a police car, fire truck, and ambulance right around the corner when they should know better. It's especially a problem with people who move from big cities to their dream home in the country. You can hear the disbelief in their voice when they find out the trucks can't respond until the volunteers reach their station.
