There's no hope -- the washing machine is definitely broken. The smoke has cleared, but instead of merrily spinning it just emits a crackling, buzzing noise (well, it did until I unplugged it.)

This is a problem. I have no experience with using big rocks to clean my clothes, nor is there a stream nearby. Nor is there money in the bank. Well, there is, but none of it's mine.

A way of making the most of stuff - so it is quite possible that somewhere near you, someone had just bought a new washing machine, but the old one still work; or someone is clearing out their parents' house ready for sale; or whatever; and they have a working washing machine too good to dump. They put it onto freecycle, and someone who wants a washing machine contacts them and goes around to pick it up.

I have seen quite a few of my LJ friends talk about stuff they have given away/got rid of through, or got from, freecycle - I'd guess it is worth a look, 'cos you never know...

There have been some problems on LJ this week -- I'm hearing Great Britain is getting the worst of it. In an (I assume) unrelated note, I can't reply to your message in my in-box here on DW; after some trial and error I realized I could reply from my original message screen.

Anyway, there is a group here in Albion, and I applied to it, so we'll see! Thanks for the info.
