Considering I have a biopsy scheduled for a little over a week from now, this is kinda personal for me this year ... I'll have more info about that and the Relay Team I'll be joining a bit later.
The Noble County Relay For Life is halfway to its goal of 40 teams for this year’s event, but they need more help to make the May 22-23 Relay a success.
As of the January 23 organizational meeting, the NCRL had roughly 20 teams registered. The sign-up fee for new groups is only $10 per member after that date; that cost will be taken off the team fund raising total.
Details of this year’s efforts are starting to be firmed up, and efforts continue toward this year’s goal of $75,000 raised for American Cancer Society programs. As further incentive, NCRL Chairman Ed Anderson issued a challenge to the teams: If they raise $100,000 Anderson, work release coordinator for the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, will be there in uniform to have his head shaved. Mark O’Maley, Community Representative for the American Cancer Society, along with Albion Town Councilman/volunteer firefighter Mark Hunter, also agreed to participate in this hair razing challenge.
Last year’s Relay brought in $43,000, which Anderson said was “a lot more than we thought” considering the poor economy.
They’re looking for a hundred or more cancer survivors to appear at the Relay, which officially kicks off with an inspirational opening ceremony at the West Noble High School football field, along US 33 south of Ligonier. Organizers are looking for the names of recent survivors, as well as those who have passed on in the last year. Please send that information to Cholene Anderson by e-mail at luckyme@ligtel.com.
Everyone is also asked to start saving their quarters, which will be used to line the track at the Relay. If enough are brought to cover the ¼ mile distance, another $4,000 will be raised. There will also be a silent auction at the Relay.
In addition, donors who give $100 will get a track sign, which will be hung on the fence around the track during the Relay. People or businesses who wish to give without the recognition can choose not to have a sign.
There will be many other things going on during the Relay, of course, and getting started early is essential for making the event a success. Volunteers are the backbone of this fight against cancer, and more help is always welcome. Team tools are available that include materials to sell and collection cans, and one team is already planning a bake sell: Saturday, February 20, starting at 9 a.m. at the Ligonier Recreation Center.
The next Committee meeting is planned for the Noble County Public Library in Albion, on February 11 at 7 p.m.

March 11: In the library’s Walker Board Room in the basement.
March 25: Team Captain Meeting
April 8: in the Walker Board Room.
April 22: in the Schultz Room upstairs.
April 29: Team Captain meeting.

May 12: Bank night.
May 20: If needed to wrap up final details.
Friday, May 21: Relay setup at West Noble High School, beginning at 4 p.m. The relay begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, and goes on until 10 a.m. Sunday, with a 2010 theme of Beach/Luau.
Anderson is chairing the NCRL committee this year, with Carla Fiandt acting as Vice-Chair.
