You're the second person who's mentioned chic-lit -- interesting! Since I already have the two romantic comedies published, I've done my fair share of marketing research, but sadly that's something a writer can't investigate too much.
I've been on the agent hunt for some years now. In fact, about eight years ago I actually had an agent, who gave it a good shot but ended up leaving the business after we'd worked together a couple of years. These days, agents are overwhelmed with queries as much as editors are, but I'm still working on it. I agree with you that genre fiction is a better target than general fiction--a lot of readers are looking for stuff in specific areas. Every possibility is worth considering, though.
