And couldn't people stop burning stuff until we get more rain?
The Albion Fire Department was called to three of the seven wildland fires reported to the Noble County Sheriff's Department early this week.
Albion and Avilla firefighters extinguished flames that spread over about 4-5 acres of field Sunday afternoon. The blaze broke out near 2992 S 600 E at about 1 p.m., and it took about an hour to bring it under control. Seven trucks responded, including four from Albion manned by 13 firefighters.
A fire on the south edge of Albion burned into a woods later that same afternoon. Flames spread from a burn barrel at 1962 N SR 9, then burned through grass in a wooded area owned by the Noble County Government. Fire approached the South Annex building, but firefighters in four wheel drive brush trucks were able to get between the trees and douse the flames before any structures were damaged.
Twelve firefighters manning two brush units, a fire engine and water tanker responded, controlling the blaze in about twenty minutes.
Also on Sunday, LaOtto fire trucks responded to help the Huntertown Fire Department on a field fire in Allen County, while Orange Township firefighters were called to a fire near Rome City that turned out to be a controlled burn.
An allegedly unattended grass fire started to burn out of control near county roads 90 W and 100 S Monday. A neighbor reported the flames moving toward their house at about 2:35 p.m., bringing out units of the Albion and Noble Township Fire Departments for about an hour.
A larger fire, just north of the county line in LaGrange County, came in at around 2:10 p.m. Johnson Township firefighters were originally called to the blaze at 200 W and 800 S, but as it grew they called for a brush unit to come to the scene from the Orange Township Fire Department and another truck from Kendallville for standby. Units were on the scene of the field fire for over an hour.
At 4:09 p.m. Monday two fire departments were called to a field fire that threatened a house near county roads 200 S and 950 W. About two and a half acres were found burning when units arrived, and it about forty-five minutes for Cromwell and Noble Township firefighters to bring the situation under control.
Just before that fire, Albion Police had a homeowner extinguish a leaf fire along South Street. It was reported as a smoke nuisance, and didn't spread off the property of the person doing the burning; most open burning is banned inside town limits.
