This place was kind of out in the middle of nowhere, about halfway between the two closest fire stations but not really near either of them. We hauled plenty of water to the scene, but by the time the fire was discovered and trucks got there the burning building was a loss. This is where protecting the exposures becomes critical -- there was a time when it wasn't uncommon for entire farms and neighboring homes to be leveled by radiant heat and falling firebrands.

Fire destroyed a garage and its contents near Upper Long Lake Saturday.

A column of smoke could already be seen from miles away when the fire, at 0216 N 375 W, was reported at 1:45 p.m., according to the Noble County Sheriff's Department. By the time units arrived the thirty by sixty foot wood frame structure was collapsing, and firefighters had to protect other nearby structures from the radiant heat. The property was reportedly owned by Mike Zawadzke.

Some children were in the nearby house when the fire broke out, and at the direction of dispatchers went to a neighbor's residence to avoid the danger. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Two vehicles, a 1997 Dodge Ram and a 2000 Buick Park Avenue, were reportedly gutted by the flames. Also inside the building and destroyed were a golf cart and a lawn mower, among other items.

Two fire engines and three other trucks, manned by 17 firefighters, responded from the Albion Fire Department, while members of the Noble Township Fire Department brought three more trucks to the scene. It took about twenty minutes to bring the flames under control, and firefighters remained on the scene until about 3 p.m.
I need to spend a lot of time winterizing my house: putting plastic on windows, covering the air conditioner, things like that. I also need to install this neat little device that redirects clothes drier air into the house, which pumps in the warm, more humid air and allows me to seal the outside vent. Things like that.

I don't want to do these things. I hate to do these things.

Why? Because it amounts to breaking down and admitting that summer is over, and winter is coming. I got my first bad sinus headache of the year over the weekend, and my SAD is already poking at me. The last thing I need to do is dig out the long underwear, tap my mind on the proverbial shoulder, and say "Hey -- gonna be snow soon! Ain't it purty?"

Don't get me started on heating bills.
